Todd William Van Horn, 51, of Pottstown, PA, passed away unexpectedly on October 18. He was the devoted and loving husband of Stephanie (Friscia) Van Horn, with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.
Mr. Van Horn was a standout football player at Phoenixville High School and Millersville University and spent 28 years as an educator and a coach, and served as an assistant boys’ lacrosse coach (7 years) and head coach (2016) at Pottsgrove High School.
Visitation was held on Saturday, October 24 on the football field of Pottsgrove High School. A Life Celebration followed.
Born in Phoenixville, PA, on July 7, 1969, Mr. Van Horn was the son of Ronald and Barbara (Gephart) Van Horn.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Van Horn is lovingly remembered by his sons, Tyler W. Van Horn and Zachary F. Van Horn; his sister, Janette Van Horn, companion of Ron Johnson; his sister-in-law, Laura Scalise; his nephews, Derrick Wickward, Maxton Wickward, and Gavin Scalise; his niece, Kimberly Wickward; and his father-in-law, Frank Friscia, companion of Brenda Mace.
He is predeceased by his sister, Kristine Wickward.
Mr. Van Horn graduated from Phoenixville High School in 1987 as a three sport athlete where he competed in football, wrestling and track. He graduated from Millersville University in 1992 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Education & Teaching. He played offensive line and was a Team Captain for Marauders Football, earning multiple honors. Mr. Van Horn went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Education & Administration in 2006 from Penn State University.
Over the course of 28 years, Mr. Van Horn’s passion for educating, mentoring and forming student athletes both on and off the field was a part of his daily routine. His coaching influence and career spanned all levels of athletics from youth to high school to collegiate.
Mr. Van Horn was a graduate assistant in football at Millersville in 1991, an assistant at Ursinus College from 1992 to 1997 and head coach at Souderton High from 1995 to 2005. He also was an assistant track coach at Soudeton.
Mr. Van Horn also was an assistant wrestling coach for many years at Souderton and Boyertown prior to coaching at Pottsgrove.
During his tenure as Dean of Students, Mr. Van Horn impacted dozens of Pottsgrove School District athletes as a coach and helped hundreds more students and families, often credited with supporting them academically, socially and emotionally in their high school experience.
Mr. Van Horn was known to be a kind, patient man who dedicated his life to his family and was a pillar of the Pottsgrove community. He was quiet and humble and his presence you may not have noticed in a room but every room he entered was eventually transformed with his having been in it, his sphere of influence a ripple.
