After leading the Hawks to a 15-8, season-opening win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon, Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse sophomore face-off specialist Zach Cole (Lenape) has been tabbed the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, redshirt freshman attackman Levi Anderson has earned his first Rookie of the Week honor from the league.
Cole went 88.0 percent from the X, winning a career-high 24 possessions in a career-high 27 opportunities to dominate the Bonnies. The sophomore was a perfect 7-of-7 and 5-of-5 in the second and fourth quarters, respectively, and won 10 face-off possessions in a row spanning the entire second quarter through the opening 1:58 of the third. Cole added a game-high 11 ground balls and a fourth-quarter goal in the win to earn his first PotW honor from the NEC after taking home three Rookie of the Week honors last spring. The face-off specialist shares this week’s honor with Hobart senior attackman Eric Holden.
In his collegiate debut, Anderson scored a team-high four goals and added a helper to lead 11 Hawks with at least one point. Anderson fired off nine shots, landing eight on goal, and scrapped for three ground balls in the victory.
Vandy’s Fornia (Lenape) earns AAC honor
Vanderbilt junior Gabby Fornia (Lenape-NJ) headlined the weekly conference awards as the American Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week, the league announced Monday. Fornia led the Commodores to a season-opening victory over Wagner 14-11. She led the Commodores in goals (4) and tied for the lead in assists (3).
Fornia scored twice on free position shots and also scored twice more, including the game’s final goal. After setting a Vanderbilt record with assists last season (36), she opened the 2020 campaign right where she picked off.
The junior attacker registered her first assist of the season in the first half and then twice assisted freshman Mikela McCauley on second half goals.
Lehigh’s Schneider early Patriot League award
Lehigh women’s lacrosse freshman Gabby Schneider was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday following an impressive five-point collegiate debut in Friday’s season opening win over Iona. Schneider’s five points were a game high, tallying two goals and three assists.
All five of Schneider’s points came in the game’s first 31:52 to help the Mountain Hawks take a 11-3 lead, on the way to a dominant 16-5 season-opening win. Schneider also added a groundball and two caused turnovers.
Senior Sondra Dickey (Conestoga) was also recognized on Monday, garnering honorable mention on the league’s weekly honor roll. Dickey filled up the stat sheet, posting game highs in goals (4), draw controls (4), caused turnovers (4) and groundballs (3). Entering the season tied with Kayleen Kelly for the school record in career draw controls, Dickey passed Kelly with her four draws on Saturday (currently owning 173).
