Women’s roundup: Delaware, Ursinus triumph

Host Delaware posted a 10-goal second half Wednesday afternoon en route to a 16-8 victory over George Mason.

Delaware, which trailed by as much as five midway through the first half, rallied to score 11 unanswered goals to pick up its first win on its home turf this season.

Mia DeRuggiero led the Hens (3-4) with a season-best six points on five assists and one goal to go along with a season-high three ground balls while Christine Long collected five points on four goals and an assist.

Delaware also saw two goals apiece from Caroline Farley (Shawnee, NJ), Claire D’Antonio (Moorestown, NJ), Maggie McCarthy and Sydney Rausa (Hatboro-Horsham).

Farley added a game-high seven of the team’s 11 draw controls while Chantae Simms registered four caused turnovers.

Goalie Kate Brewster logged eight saves in the second half and finished the game with nine to pick up her third win of the season.

D3 – Ursinus 16, Sewanee 12

Bridget Sherry (Strath Haven) and Kaci McNeave went wild to get the Ursinus College women’s lacrosse team in the win column.

Sherry scored a career-high six goals to go with two assists and McNeave paired four goals with four assists in an offensive explosion for the Bears (1-5), who built a huge lead on Sewanee before surviving a late charge by the hosts in a 16-12 decision.

Senior Courtney Cortese (Great Valley) had two goals and two assists for Ursinus, which put 23 of its 30 shots on goal and scored on more than half of them. Senior Emily Blaszkow (six, Ursuline Academy, DE)), Sherry (five), and Cortese (four) combined for 15 of the Bears’ 19 draw controls, while sophomore Carli Heimann (Kennett) registered a career-high three caused turnovers.
