Villanova women place six on all-Big East Team

On Wednesday, May 1st the BIG EAST announced the women’s lacrosse major conference awards and the all-conference team.

This year, Villanova named six to the all-conference team which is the most honorees the Wildcats have received on a BIG EAST Regular season award ballot. The Wildcats have earned two major conference awards since being in the BIG EAST. In 2015 Jackie Froccaro was named Attacker of the Year and in 2017 Katie Comerford was named Freshman of the Year.

Junior Liz Trojan, red-shirt senior Devin Hassinger (Owen J, Roberts), and freshman Sydney Frank secured all-first team honors while sophomore Brittany Bruno, junior Grainger Rosati and freshman Alexa Moro rounded out the all-second team selections. This is the first time all six ‘Cats have been named to an all-conference team.

Trojan earns her spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team after ending the regular season leading the team in goals scored and sitting second in goals scored in conference play. The junior attack netted in 33 total season goals and 13 goals against BIG EAST teams and has converted 19 free-position shots into 10 goals.

Hassinger makes her first appearance on a conference team after being named to this year’s All-BIG EAST Preseason Team and Midfielder of the Week. At midfield she leads the team and BIG EAST in draw controls. Hassinger has won 125 total draws this year and is averaging 7.35 per game to lead the conference. She also finds her self among the first team honorees after she scored 24 goals, grabbed 28 ground balls and caused 18 turnovers over her 17 contests.

Rounding out the All-BIG EAST First Team selections for the Wildcats is Sydney Frank. The freshman defender earns her first conference award after a stellar rookie campaign and being named Freshman of the Week. Frank led her team with 30 caused turnovers and also collected 27 ground balls and won 15 possessions at the circle. Frank also finds herself second in the BIG EAST for caused turnovers per game with her average of 1.76.

Bruno earns her spot on the second team for the first time. The sophomore attack led the Wildcats with 15 conference goals and four assists for 19 points. She also scored a total of 31 goals finishing just behind Trojan while adding 11 assists for 42 points.

Rosati who was named Midfielder of the Week, picks up her first conference honor on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. So far, the junior has won 50 draw controls this season, recorded 16 caused turnovers and picked up 22 ground balls. Rosati has also added 17 goals and nine assists for 26 points.

Rookie goalkeeper, Alexa Moro closes out the honorees from Villanova for the 2019 regular season awards. Moro closed out regular season play earning four Freshman of the Week Honors and one Defender of the Week honor. In the net she recorded 132 saves and 22 in BIG EAST play. After facing 385 shots in 877.15 minutes of play she posted a .454 save percentage. These stats placed her third in the save percentage category and second in saves per game (7.76).

Denver brought home four honors for the 2019 season. Quintin Hoch-Bullen of Denver received Attacker of the Year. Katherine Fischer secured Defensive Player of the Year while Carson Gregg was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Denver was also named Coaching Staff of the year.

Marquette’s Grace Gabriel and Georgetown’s Francesca Whitehurst were named Co-Midfielders of the Year and Shea Garcia brought home Freshman of the Year.
