BALTIMORE – For years they have competed against each other in the Inter-Ac League as fierce rivals.

But on Friday night, Haverford School’s Peter Garno and Penn Charter’s Gavin Tygh got just a taste of what it will be like to play together – something they will do for the next four years on a team coming off a National Championship.

Garno (middie) and Tygh (faceoff/middie) were key contributors to the South squad, which fell to the North, 24-22, in the Under Armour Senior All-America Game at Johns Hopkins Homewood Field.

Garno scored twice and Tygh had a goal and won 9 of 24 faceoffs for the South. For the North, Aiden Blake (Haddonfield) had a goal, an assist and a groundball.

Garno and Tygh are headed to Charlottesville and NCAA champion Virginia. After playing against each other for so long, they agreed it was fun to begin playing beside the other.

“The experience was amazing,” said Tygh. “It was awesome to get to play with Peter. We were longtime rivals in the Inter-Ac, so it was finally cool to play with him in a game.”

Added Garno: “It was our last celebration of our high school careers and now we move, for us, into Virginia and start at square one. Obviously, I look forward to that but it was cool to have one last game.

“It was so cool to rep where we come from; we were the only two Philly guys. I was happy to have the experience.”

In all, five Virginia recruits played in the game so Garno got an even bigger taste of what is to come.

“I couldn’t be more excited to get to UVA and having five guys headed there is awesome,” he said. “We hadn’t spent lot of time with them.”

Garno said the aura of competing in the Under Armour was everything he had hoped for.

“The experience was unreal; from the gear tour at Under Armour headquarters on Thursday to playing under the lights at Homewood; it was a dream come true,” he said.

Also headed to UVA for the South are Scott Bower (DEF, Episcopal Dallas-TX) and Connor Shellenberger (ATT, St. Anne’s Belfield-VA) Meanwhile, Quentin Matsui (DEF, Eden Prairie-MN) played for the North.

Tygh said: “It felt pretty good, like all the hard work paid off. We had a platform to show our skills.

“I think it was a good indication that it’s now time to get to work. These are all elite guys heading into the summer and we need to work hard because we are all hoping to play on our future teams.

“Coach (Lars) Tiffany is an amazing coach and for five of us to come out here is amazing. We got to socialize with the UVA guys; four were on the South – Quinton was on the other team but we also got to socialize with him.”
