The PA Roughriders 2022 squad knew it was on the verge of winning a tournamrnt championship after faring well last weekend at the IMLCA National Cup in Trenton.
We had a pretty strong tournament last weekend at IMLCA,” said Roughriders goalie Joe Doherty (Malvern Prep). “We lost the championship, but we were hungry for another one.”
That hunger showed Sunday when the Roughriders handled defending champion SouthShore, 8-3, to claim the Class AA championship at the Victory Events Boys Summer Slam at Westtown School.
The Roughriders scored five straight goals to seize a 5-1 halftime lead and never allowed SouthShore closer tham three goals.
“I feel like we played as a team; that’s how we win games,” said defenseman Chris Datz (Malvern Prep). “We played with a lot of energy. We’ve played this team before a couple times and we knew what they had. We had a game plan.”
One of the keys was the defense and the goaltending by Doherty (8 saves).
“I saw the ball well from the beginning,” Doherty said. “The defense played with a lot of energy and really helped me, keeping them out and forcing them down the alley to gave me a chance to see the ball. We had a real good tourney last weekend and could have won.”
TJ Lamb – a 2023 playing up – led the Roughriders with three goals. Hank D’Ambrogi (Cape Henlopen) added two goals while Mikey Frederick (Cape Henlopen), Jack Onderdonk (Malvern Prep) and Michael Joyce (Malvern Prep) each scored once.
“Our passing this year has been unbelievable,” said Lamb (Episcopal Academy). “My teammates helped set me up a lot to get open shots. The first couple tournaments we were able to move the ball great. The offense sets people up and our chemistry has been amazing this year.”
