Sophomore Matt Moore (Garnet Valley) scored in overtime to give Virginia a 13-12 victory over Maryland today in Hempstead, NY and a berth in the NCAA Division I Final Four next weekend at Lincoln Financial Field.
Moore (2G, 1A) took a feed from Michael Kraus and drilled a rocket home 45 seconds into the extra frame.
Dox Aitken (Haverford School) had a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers (14-3) while Jeff Conner (Strath Haven) had an assist. Ryan Conrad led UVA with four goals and an assist and Ian Laviano had three goals.
Virginia will meet Duke – also an overtime winner over Notre Dame – in the semifinals on Saturday at the Linc. Two more semifinals – one featuring Penn State vs. Loyola and another between Penn and Yale – will be held tomorrow at East Hartford, CT.
Faceoff specialist Petey LaSalla won his seventh faceoff in a row to start overtime and Kraus found a streaking Moore for the game-winning score. The score by Moore was his 40th goal of the season, making him the first single-season 40-goal, 40-assist man in UVA program history. He is the fourth player nationally to reach the plateau in 2019.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Including overtime, LaSalla won the game’s final seven faceoffs and 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter as Virginia mounted its comeback. Maryland’s lone faceoff win of the fourth quarter led to the Terps’ final score of the game at 10:38, courtesy of an Anthony DeMaio tally.
Conrad scored back-to-back goals to jumpstart the UVA streak to victory. After Conrad made it 12-9 with 3:25 to go, Ian Laviano scored 20 seconds later on a Kraus assist after LaSalla won the faceoff, cutting UVA’s deficit to two goals, 12-10.
Conrad scored his fourth of the game, third of the half, at 2:41 to bring UVA within one goal, 12-11. Virginia tied the game for the fourth time, 12-12, with 1:14 left when Aitken found Kraus, who stung the corner.
LaSalla won the ensuing faceoff, but UVA wasn’t able to score before regulation ran out as the stage was set for the overtime heroics.
Justin Schwenk (Spring-Ford) won 2 of 3 faceoffs in reserve of Petey LaSalla.
