Gerry Byrne, Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Lacrosse, has announced the hiring of Ted Bergman (Strath Haven) to the program’s staff as its volunteer assistant coach.

Bergman comes to Harvard from Cleveland State where he spent the previous season as a volunteer assistant coach. With Bergman’s assistance, the Vikings had one of its finest seasons yet, as they led the nation in opponent clearing percentage and doubled their win total from the prior season.

“It is both a privilege and an honor to coach lacrosse at Harvard University,” stated Bergman. “I have a sincere admiration for the prestigious history of Harvard and am energized by the widespread expectation of excellence. I believe in the vision and leadership of Coach Byrne, and am truly grateful for the opportunity to help build a new culture.”

A standout goaltender and team captain at Wesleyan, Bergman was named the National Goalie of the Year in 2017 and earned the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. honor from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. During his time with the Cardinals, Bergman was the first player to be named first team All-American as a goalie, while leading Wesleyan to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in a decade and its second New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament title in school history.

Bergman also brings significant experience playing and coaching overseas, spending five summers in Israel where he helped develop and coach lacrosse at the grassroots level. Prior to serving as an assistant coach for Uganda at the 2018 World Championships and head coach for the inaugural Slovenian national team at the 2016 European Lacrosse Championships, Bergman spent two seasons playing in the Israel Premier Lacrosse League. A native of Media, Bergman earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Wesleyan in 2017 and master’s degree in public policy from Tel Aviv University in 2018.
