West Chester University will make its 12th appearance in the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament at home next weekend when the first two rounds of the NCAAs come to Vonnie Gros Field Friday and Saturday it was announced on NCAA.com Sunday evening.
West Chester (19-0), ranked sixth in the country and fresh off its 22nd PSAC Championship in school history, is one of two undefeated teams in the nation and earned the top seed in the Atlantic Region. This year’s regional landscape was expanded from two to four regions with the top three ranked schools earning a bid to the tournament. No automatic qualifiers for conference champions exists in Division II women’s lacrosse, making all 12 selections at-large picks.
Next weekend’s NCAA Tournament will look eerily similar to the PSAC Championships contested at Vonnie Gros Field this past weekend. The first round matchup on Friday will feature No. 2 seeded East Stroudsburg against No. 3 seeded Mercyhurst in a rematch of one of the PSAC semifinal games this past Friday. The winner of that game will advance to the quarterfinals to face top seeded West Chester on Saturday at 5 p.m. Saturday’s winner will advance to the national semifinals in Tampa, Fla., on Friday, May 18 and Sunday, May 20.
West Chester has won two national titles (2002, 2008) and been to the finals nine times. West Chester is a combined 14-9 in its previous 11 trips to nationals. This season marks the first time since 2010 that the Golden Rams have hosted an NCAA Tournament game.
