After falling behind 7-3 in the second quarter, and down 9-6 midway through the fourth, the University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team scored the game’s last four goals – the final two coming just seven seconds apart with three minutes left – to knock off No. 1 Duke on Saturday at Franklin Field, 10-9.
Kevin McGeary (Malvern Prep) scored the winning goal, off a feed from Connor Keating (Haverford School), mere seconds after feeding Simon Mathias for the tying goal. Duke had a final chance to tie, but could not get a shot off.
Penn is now 2-1 on the season, while Duke falls to 4-1 overall.
McGeary had three goals and an assist and Adam Goldner (Malvern Prep) had three goals while Mathias had a goal and three assists and Keating had two assists and five groundballs. Reilly Hupfeldt (Haverford School) scored once and Chris Santangelo won 15 of 22 faceoffs while Reed Junkin posted 10 saves.
For Duke, LSM Greg Pelton (Malvern Prep) had three groundballs and a caused turnover.
