McCool (Moorestown) leads No. 1 UNC in ACC Preseason Poll

Two-time defending champion North Carolina has been picked as the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse preseason favorite in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

The Tar Heels received four first-place votes and led the balloting with 59 total points. Syracuse (53 points) was picked for a second-place finish, followed by Boston College (48) and Virginia (39).

Notre Dame (37 points) placed fifth in the voting, followed by Duke (23), Virginia Tech (19) and Louisville (10).

Syracuse and Boston College each received two first-place votes.

UNC and Boston College each had four student-athletes voted to the 16-member 2018 Preseason All-ACC Team, and three were chosen from Virginia.

The Preseason All-ACC Team includes four first-team selections from last season in Boston College junior Sam Apuzzo (A), North Carolina seniors Ela Hazar (A) and Marie McCool (M), and Virginia junior Maggie Jackson (M).

Five players selected to the 2018 preseason team were second-team All-ACC performers last season – Boston College junior Elizabeth Miller (D), Duke senior Maddie Crutchfield (M), Syracuse senior Riley Donahue (A), and Virginia senior Kasey Behr (M) and junior Kaitlin Luzik (D).

Seven of the ACC’s eight teams are set to open their seasons this weekend, while Virginia will get underway on Saturday, February 17.

Three ACC teams are ranked among the nation’s top 10 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason poll with North Carolina at No. 3, Boston College at No. 6 and Syracuse at No. 7. Virginia is at No. 13, followed by Notre Dame at No. 15 and Duke at No. 19.
