Christian Cuccinello had a career high seven goals – including the tying and winning tallies – during the Wildcats’ 13-12 victory at Delaware today. Villanova moves to 5-0 on the year for the first time in program history.
A game that saw six ties took until the final minutes to be decided inside Delaware Stadium.
Villanova netted two goals in the final minute of the third quarter to tie it up at 10. It only took Danny Seibel seconds in the fourth to give Villanova a 11-10 lead but the Blue Hens’ answered back. Dean DiSimone (St. Augustine Prep), who finished with five goals, scored twice to put Delaware ahead 12-11.
Villanova’ switched goalies and sophomore Michael Toomey step in for the final 10 minutes. He had two big saves to stop the Delaware offense.
Cuccinello finished the game scoring one goal at 9:57 and then the game winner at 7:30 to give Villanova the win.
Freshman Dan Fisher (St. Joseph’s Prep) went 17-for-27 from the faceoff dot with six ground balls. Defensive midfielder TJ Comizio had five ground balls while Kirst had three.
Bryce Reid (Avon Grove) scored four goals and Will Hirschmann had two goals and an assist for the Hens. Charlie Kitchen (St. Augustine Prep) had a goal and two assists. Jake Hervarda (Haverford School) won 8 of 18 faceoffs.
The game started with Delaware scoring the first two before Cuccinello, Devin McNamara, and Connor Kirst would bring the Wildcats back into the game and only trail one and the end of the first 15. Bryce Reid, who had four goals for Delaware scored early before Cuccinello and DeSimone closed out the quarter to make the halftime score 6-6.
