As sure as the tide goes out in the morning and comes in during the afternoon, the Interboro Bucs lacrosse program will win a championship at the Morey’s Piers Beach Lacrosse Tournament in Wildwood.

Since 2011, Interboro’s high school or Young Bucs (middle school) squads have won at least one division crown. This year the Interboro Beach Bucs Lax team won the U16 title by going 4-0 Saturday and Sunday.

“This team was so successful because we stuck through the hot sand and sunburn and we were able to look past any negativity from other teams,” said Interboro 2019 goalie Connor Evans, who also played on the team last year that won the U15 title. “Our chemistry, from goalie to shooter is right.

“The tradition for the Bucs in Wildwood stretches from when I was probably in third grade. The tradition is so great for us; everybody is able to set aside one weekend with their lacrosse family to catch a few wins and see competition throughout the summer.”

The Beach Bucs clinched the title Sunday with a 15-10 win over Mitchell Top Steeze, but their toughest game came from the Interboro Young Bucs, a gritty grout of rising freshmen. That was a 13-11 thriller on Saturday.

The Bucs team consisted of Evans, Mark Loomis, Jason Whalen, Mikey Brown, Ryan Galanaugh, AJ Porreca, Matt Mosloskie, Nick Renz, Ray Scanlan, and James Udowenko. The coach was Jason Whalen Sr.

“This tourney helps us since it’s not just playing four or five games on the beach; it’s about spending more time than just at practice or at a game and having fun at the beach with our teammates while being away from the sticks.”

How did Evans adjust to playing on the sand? “Playing goalie on sand can be an obstacle since the ball doesn’t really bounce as much as it would on turf or grass,” he said. “This weekend we came in contact with rain the night before so it was like lacrosse in a lake and when that happens the ball doesn’t bounce virtually at all.

“The only other problem is the balls of sand being thrown at you.”
