From Press Release
Senior Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s LC) tallied six points and the faceoff tandem of Austin Henningsen and Jon Garino, Jr. (Episcopal Academy, Duke’s LC), won 20-of-30 faceoffs to lead the No. 8 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over No. 1 Penn State on Senior Day.
The win moved head coach John Tillman to 4-0 all-time against top-ranked opponents at Maryland, although it was the first such win since 2014. Maryland (7-2, 2-0) maintained first place in the Big Ten Conference, while Penn State (10-1, 1-1) was handed its first loss of the season.
In addition to Rambo’s six points, junior Connor Kelly pitched in five points (4g, 1a) and senior Colin Heacock had three goals and an assist. Henningsen won 11-of-19 faceoffs and had a goal, while his counterpart, Garino, went 9-of-11 with seven ground balls.
Also for Maryland, defensemen Bryce Young (St. Augustine Prep) and Curtis Conley (Shawnee) excelled. Young had two groundballs, and two caused turnovers and Conley had two groundballs.
For the Lions Grant Ament (Haverford School) had two goals and two assists and Mike Sutton (St. Augustine Prep) had two goals while Chris Sabia (Haverford School) had two caused turnovers and a groundball and Nick Cardile (Avon Grove) had a groundball to pace the defense. Tripp Tranor (Malvern Prep) added two groundballs.
Maryland was in complete control nearly the entire contest, continuing its recent first quarter success. The Terps scored at least six goals in the first quarter for the third consecutive game – this time led by Rambo, who had a hat trick secured less than seven minutes into the contest.
Rambo capped off an emphatic opening frame by feeding Tim Rotanz for his fourth point, which gave the Terps a 6-3 lead.
Heacock then took over in the second quarter, scoring a pair of goals. Senior Dylan Maltz’s laser with 21 seconds remaining in the half gave the Terps a 10-6 advantage at the break.
The Terps stretched their lead to six, 12-6, three minutes into the third quarter on goals by Rambo and senior Ben Chisolm, but the Nittany Lions fought back with three straight of their own.
It was the closest Penn State would come, however, as a pair of Kelly goals and a Heacock strike gave the Terps an insurmountable 15-9 lead.
Maryland dominated the ground ball battle with a 34-16 advantage and Matt Neufeldt turned in a superb performance with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Rambo continued to climb the record books, passing legendary four-time all-american Frank Urso for fourth all-time in career points (212).
