From Press Release
Chestnut Hill College Director of Athletics and Recreation Lynn Tubman is pleased to welcome Michael Terranova back to Chestnut Hill College as the Scarlet and Gold’s next head men’s lacrosse coach.
Terranova first established himself as a valuable asset to both the College’s Department of Admissions and the Department of Athletics and Recreation between 2009 and 2016. Recruiting, advising, and counseling prospective students as an assistant director of transfer admissions, Terranova also served as the associate head coach of the College’s men’s lacrosse team. His hard work and determination in developing the Griffins’ initial men’s lacrosse roster and subsequent success as the team’s offensive coordinator landed him an assistant coach position (Offensive Coordinator and Face-Off Coach) at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I member, Lafayette College (2014-2017).
“I am very excited to return to Chestnut Hill College as the next Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. My vision for the men’s lacrosse program is congruent with the college’s authentic commitment to academic excellence, shared responsibility and service to others. I could not have imagined a better place for me to become a head coach for the first time,” said Terranova. “I would like to thank Director Tubman, Associate Director (Jesse) Balcer, and the college’s search committee for selecting me.
“Additionally, I would also like to thank Coach (Brady) McCormick, Coach Carrington, Coach Dougherty, and Coach (Jim) Rogalski for teaching and mentoring me over the last 10 years in preparation for this opportunity.”
Tubman endorsed the College’s hire with confidence, “I believe Mike’s recent tenure as a as a DI assistant coach, coupled with his commitment and dedication to our student-athletes will allow him to hit the ground running, and establish our program as a perennial power in the CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference).”
The Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team recently enjoyed its most successful season (2017) to date; an 8-5 overall record and a 6-2 East Coast Conference (ECC) standing that positioned the #3 Griffins in a semifinal at #2 Mercy College on May 3. The Scarlet and Gold will compete in the CACC in 2018, joining fellow former ECC member, Dominican College, Felician University, Georgian Court University, Post University, and Wilmington University as conference’s inaugural men’s lacrosse league.
Terranova helped former Chestnut Hill College head coaches, Brian Dougherty (2011-2017) and Richard Carrington (2009-2010), develop a new program into a consistent NCAA Division II competitor. During his tenure, the Griffins became known as an offensive force that averaged nearly 11 goals-per-game (10.20). In 2013, the Griffins finished second in the ECC for shooting percentage (32.7%, 138 goals on 422 shots) and second nationally in extra-man offense (43.1%).
The following season, 2014, Terranova helped lead Chestnut Hill College to their first ECC Championship Tournament appearance. During the five-season period, 14 student-athletes garnered All-ECC recognition, including Michael Melnychenko ’14 who served as program’s first student-athlete to earn four straight All-ECC accolades (2011: ECC Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Year, Honorable Mention, 2012: 2nd Team, 2013: 2nd Team, 2014: 1st Team) and reach the professional ranks (National Lacrosse League: Buffalo Bandits (49th overall pick, sixth round). Terranova came to Chestnut Hill College by way of Upper Merion High School, where he served as the assistant varsity lacrosse coach during the program’s first two years of interscholastic play (2008-2009).
Terranova began his intercollegiate career as a member of Christopher Newport University’s (CNU) NCAA DIII Top-25 men’s football team. After a pair of seasons with the captains, he transferred to the midfield of the State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo men’s lacrosse team. He attended Fayetteville-Manlius High School in central New York, where he played for The National High School Hall of Fame (Presented by the National Federation of State High School Associations) Coach Chris Kenneally. He graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in human services at Chestnut Hill College.
