The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team scored five consecutive fourth quarter goals to post an 11-7 victory over the University of Delaware Friday night at Rafferty Stadium in the final game for Blue Hen head coach Bob Shillinglaw.

Delaware, which dropped its fifth straight game following its 13-9 upset of then top-ranked Rutgers on Mar. 25, ends its 2017 season at 7-8 overall and 0-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags, who won their second consecutive contest, close the year at 5-9 overall and 2-3 in league play.

The game marked the final contest on the sideline for Shillinglaw, who ends his 42-year career with a record of 334-319, including a 310-303 mark during his 39 years at Delaware. A two-time USILA National Coach of the Year, Shillinglaw coached more games than any coach in college lacrosse history, while his 334 victories are fourth among active head coaches.

Drew Murray (Penn Charter) had two goals and an assist and Will Fox (St. Augustine Prep) won 7 of 10 faceoffs for Fairfield. Ryan Antell (Malvern Prep) had three groundballs.

After falling behind 5-1 following the first quarter, the Blue Hens stormed back by scoring all four second quarter goals to pull even at 5-5 at the break. Joe Eisele (St. Augustine Prep) ignited the run with a goal off a Charlie Kitchen (St. Augustine Prep) assist, and after Kitchen scored on an Andrew Romagnoli feed three and a half minutes later, Romagnoli found Will Hirschmann for a goal at the 9:20 mark to bring Delaware within one.

Steve DeLargey then scored off another Romagnoli assist with 2:27 on the clock, pulling Blue Hens even heading into halftime.

Eisele gave Delaware its first lead of the night by scoring off a Matt Olbrich pass just 11 seconds into the third quarter, and after Colin Burke equalized for Fairfield, Romagnoli fed Kitchen for a goal to put the Blue Hens up 7-6 with 4:49 left in the stanza.

Delaware carried the one-goal advantage into the final quarter, but after Nico Panepinto pulled the Stags even at the 11:52 mark, Fairfield scored three goals in a 2:52 stretch to take a 10-7 advantage with 4:39 on the clock. Burke then scored the final tally with an unassisted goal with 54 seconds to play to account for the final margin.

Eisele notched his third hat trick of the season with a team-high three goals for the Blue Hens, while Romagnoli handed out a career-best four assists on the night. Kitchen added a pair of tallies, while Matt Deluca made 10 saves in the Delaware goal.

Burke paced Fairfield with three goals and three assists, while Dylan Beckwich also scored three times for the Stags.
