From Press Release
Rising women’s lacrosse seniors Katie FitzPatrick (Merion Mercy) and Olivia Russell have been named the 2018 captains as voted upon by their teammates and announced today by Head Coach Laura Field.
“Both Katie and Liv represent the very best about Fairfield women’s lacrosse; they are tireless workers who instinctively put the team first and represent our team and our Fairfield family in the exemplary manner that we have come to expect from our outstanding leaders,” said Field. “They are joined by a strong senior class and we expect the class of 2018 to power us back to the MAAC Championship weekend.”
Both players made a consistent impact on the field, appearing in all 18 games for Fairfield while helping guide the team to the 2017 MAAC Championship Game.
FitzPatrick started at defense in every game of her junior season, ranking third on the team in both groundballs (35) and caused turnovers (19). The defender saved her best for late in the season when it mattered most, she was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on May 1st after scooping up seven groundballs, collecting two draw controls, and causing two turnovers in the team’s win over Manhattan. FitzPatrick then earned a nod on the MAAC All-Championship Team after playing stellar defense while picking up four groundballs and causing five turnovers in two games.
Russell appeared in every game in 2017 at attack for Fairfield. She earned a start in the season opener at Holy Cross while tallying one goal, three groundballs, and one draw control. The attacker had a two goal game at Central Connecticut on March 29. Russell contributed in Fairfield’s MAAC Semifinal win over Marist with her sixth goal of the season. She finished the year with seven points, five groundballs, and one draw control.
