From Press Release

The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team recently closed out its fall scrimmage schedule at the University City Classic and in the process participated in the battle against cancer.

Delaware, under the direction of first-year head coach Ben DeLuca, led his team against squads from Bellarmine and Quinnipiac in the conclusion to the fall exhibition season.

Each NCAA team was given the opportunity to raise at least $3,000 for the HEADstrong Foundation to help families in their fight against cancer. Of the 41 teams that participated in the fundraising efforts during the fall, the Blue Hens ranked third overall by raising $8,250.

The total dollar amount raised during the fall surpassed the $175,000 mark, which will allow the HEADstrong Foundation to provide direct financial assistance to 20 families affected by cancer.

Delaware freshman midfielder Cole Baker and junior midfielder Thomas Aloe raised $604 and $553 respectively for the Foundation to lead the Blue Hens in their efforts. Other Blue Hens who made a big impact were junior attackman Jake Stanford, who raised $517, sophomore midfielder Ryan Shaw, who raised $414, and senior defender Connor Lalley, who raised $405.

The Blue Hen student-athletes take part in multiple charitable events over the course of the year, including the B+ Foundation and UDance. Both organizations are helping in the fight against childhood cancer.

After making a positive impact off the field, the Blue Hens are looking to move their way towards the top of the Colonial Athletic Association standings under the leadership of DeLuca. With only four freshmen on the roster, the Blue Hens will rely heavily on experience from the upperclassmen to lead the way.

“We have some things to work on, but we have a lot of positives to take away from the two scrimmages this fall,” said DeLuca. “But what I am most grateful for, however, is the fundraising that our team did to benefit a great cause.”
