Widener was tabbed third in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. The Pride received 48 points in the poll.
Stevenson was unanimously selected to claim the title with 64 points and all eight first-place votes. Messiah was selected second with 56 points, while Widener was third with 48 points. Lebanon Valley, Albright, Lycoming, Arcadia, Hood and Alvernia completed the poll.
Widener, which advanced to the semifinal round of the conference tournament last season, will look to build upon a 2015 campaign that saw the program finish 7-10 overall and 5-3 in league action. Senior captain Marc LaVine, who made the all-conference first team for the second time last spring, headlines a list of more than 30 letterwinners. The midfielder contributed 32 points on 23 goals and nine assists. Other notable returners include senior defender Scott Allison (Downingtown East), senior attack Tim Taylor (Archbishop Ryan) and senior goalkeeper Tyler McClary. All three players made the all-conference second team last spring.
The five-team, single elimination Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament is slated to begin on Monday, May 2. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship.
