From Press Release
No. 7 Rollins scored with 31 seconds left in the game, and then won the ensuing draw control, to hold off No. 8 West Chester, 9-8, in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament Friday at Bryant Stadium.
West Chester (17-3) makes its earliest exit from the NCAAs in its 11 trips to the postseason while Rollins (15-3) advances to play Florida Southern in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Hannah Cowan’s (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) team-best 63rd goal of the season with 9:18 left in the second half gave the Golden Rams an 8-7 lead. However, the Tars tied it up with just over seven minutes left to play and then got the game winner in the final minute.
The two sides traded goals in the first half with the score remaining knotted at 4-4 at the break. Rollins put together two consecutive goals six minutes apart early in the second half to take a 6-5 lead. However, West Chester answered, and the teams once again traded goals until the Rams put together a two-goal run late in the game, which preceded the Tars’ final run.
There were eight ties in the contest and neither team held a lead larger than a single goal.
Sami Barnett (Interboro) scored two goals, and Dina Cifelli (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame) scored once and assisted on three others for four points in the game.
West Chester goalkeeper Paige Mitros (Garnet Valley) made 10 saves in the cage, keeping the Rams in the game the whole time. Rollins’ Malorie Olin made seven saves in the win.
Cowan finishes her career with 182 goals to her credit and 223 points.
