UVA senior goalie Barrett (Malvern Prep) suspended indefinitely; faces hearing for drug charge

Virginia starting goalie Matt Barrett, a Malvern Prep graduate has been indefinitely suspended from the team and faces a hearing for drug charges.

Barrett, 21, a senior who earned USILA Second Team All-American honors in 2015, was charged with possession of a Schedule II drug on Aug. 12 in Ocean City, MD. Inside Lacrosse first reported the incident on Aug. 19.

Barrett started all 15 games and posted 137 saves for a Cavaliers team that went 7-8 in 2016. He was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week in the first week in April.

OC Today had further details on the incident.

Barrett’s best season was in 2015 when he also was All-ACC and led the ACC with 12.20 saves per game (eighth nationally). Barrett also was a started as a freshman who he posted 149 saves.

At Malvern Prep, Barrett led Malvern Prep to the Inter-Ac League title in 2013 and earned All-American and First Team honors.
