The University of Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team got off to a quick start on Tuesday afternoon against Maryland, but the 20th-ranked Quakers could not sustain that early momentum and fell to the sixth-ranked Terps, 13-8, at Franklin Field.
Junior Matt Rambo (La Salle, Duke’s L.C.) had three goals and an assist to lead the Terps.
Penn got unassisted goals from freshman Simon Mathias and junior Austin Kreinz just 10 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead just 1:35 into Tuesday’s contest. However, Maryland scored the next four goals over a span of 5:48 and never trailed after that. Penn never let the Terrapins run away with it, but could not get level with its guests. Nick Doktor made it 4-3 with four minutes left in the first quarter, but Maryland scored twice in the final 1:55 to take a 6-3 lead after one.
Alex Roesner and Kevin McGeary (Malvern Prep) got the first two goals of the second quarter, which made the score 6-5, but Maryland responded with the next three goals to make it 9-5. Penn got one back when Joe Licciardi scored with 1:29 left before halftime, but a killer UM goal with just six seconds left in the half sent the teams to the locker room with the Terps up, 10-6.
Maryland scored the only goal in the third quarter; meanwhile, Penn went nearly 24 minutes of game time without a goal before Mathias finally got the Quakers back on the board with 7:55 left in the fourth. UM responded with the next two goals, just 1:13 apart, before Pat Berkery closed the day’s scoring with a late Penn goal off a Kevin McGeary feed.
Colin Heacock also had three goals and an assist apiece. Bryan Cole went for three points (2g, 1a).
Reed Junkin started slowly in goal for Penn, but came back strong in the second half to make seven of his eight saves on the day. At the other end, Kyle Bernlohr made 10 stops for Maryland.
Penn returns to action on Saturday, traveling to New Haven, Conn., to take on No. 1 Yale. The Quakers and the Bulldogs will face off at noon.
