Philly girls’ HS previews: Suburban One’s Wissahickon, Upper Merion

Wissahickon High School

League: Suburban One American
PL Girls' HS previews
Head Coach: Patty Kovacs, 2nd Year as Head Coach

Last year’s record: 15-4 overall, 9-0 league, first in league. Lost to CBW in the first round of playoffs.

Returnees: Marie Dickson (senior, def), Emily Vervlied (junior, mid), Carolyn Wilde (junior, mid), Megan DeGroat (junior, def)

Coach’s Outlook for 2016 season: “We are extremely excited to be starting this year with a strong, aggressive group of girls. Every player on the team is capable of contributing and adding to our success. We will look for improvement with each game played and should prove to be competitive.”

Upper Merion High School

League: Suburban One American League Conference

Head Coach: Angie Yanocha, Entering 11th year as Head coach

Last year’s record: Overall record- 7-11, SOL American- 4-5

Key returnees: Anna Davis, Senior/Midfield, Haley O’Malley, Senior/Attack, Lizzy Goernemann, Senior/Defense, Jordan Cabahug-Almonte, Senior/GK, Francesca Lindelow, Junior/Attack, Allison Shuster, Junior/Attack, Quinn O’Malley, Sophomore/Midfield, Marion Fortino, Senior/Defense, Karli Friend, Sophomore/Defense, Gabrielle Struckus, Junior/Defense
Others to watch (include grade/position): Molly Weygand, Freshman/Midfield, Riley O’Malley, Freshman/Attack

Coach’s Outlook for 2016 season: “We come into this season with experience since we’re returning all but 2 players who graduated. There’s talent spread across all positions and the team is very balanced. The girls have really been working hard to push each other at practices. As long as we play together as a team and continue to strengthen a few of our weaknesses, our goal of making districts this year should be attainable.”
