.@PennMensLax uses big 3rd quarter to top Michigan; Keating gets 2 goals

The Pennsylvania men’s lacrosse team used a dominating third quarter to defeat Michigan on Saturday at Franklin Field, 12-10. It was the first meeting between the Quakers and the Wolverines in men’s lacrosse.

The Quakers, who started four freshmen and saw two more get major playing time, used a balanced attack in their opener. Nine different players scored, with senior Nick Doktor, sophomore defenseman Connor Keating (Haverford School) and freshman Simon Mathias finding the goal twice each. Keating also had an assist, for three points along with four groundballs and a caused turnover, while Pat Berkery had a goal and two assists for three more points.

The key was the third quarter. Penn and Michigan were tied coming out of the halftime break, 4-4, but the Red and Blue had all of the six goals in the period — the goals coming from six different players.

Michigan (1-2) scored two goals early in the fourth quarter, both of them matched by the Quakers (Berkery and Joe Licciardi). However, the Wolverines made the fans nervous down the stretch, scoring four goals over a five-minute span to make it 12-10 with 1:29 to play. However, Penn was able to hold on for the victory.

Reed Junkin made the start in the Penn goal, and the freshman was sensational in his debut with 12 saves. At the other end, Gerald Logan had 10 stops in the Michigan goal.

Kevin McGeary (Malvern Prep) and Reilly Hupfeldt (Haverford School) also scored for Penn while Chris Hilburn (Malvern Prep) had two assists ad a caused turnover and defenseman Kevin Gayhardt (Episcopal Academy) had two groundballs and a caused turnover.

Stefan Bergman (La Salle) had two groundballs and an assist for Michigan.

Penn is at No. 14 Virgina next Sunday.
