The University of Pennsylvania’s James H. Greene, Jr. Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse, Mike Murphy, has announced his 2017 coaching staff.
Patrick Myers remains on staff as Associate Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator. Casey Ikeda, who was the program’s Director of Operations last year, moves into an assistant coach position, replacing Jim Stagnitta who left after the 2016 season to become head coach of Major League Lacrosse’s Charlotte Hounds. Mike Bartomioli, who was the program’s volunteer assistant last year, moves back into the Director of Operations role that he held for the 2015 season and will also take on added responsibilities as the program’s Young Quakers Associate Director overseeing that collaboration with the University’s Netter Center.
“I am very excited to have Casey Ikeda on the field with us in 2017,” said Murphy. “He did a great job in our operations role last year, and has demonstrated that he is fully prepared to be on the field working with our defensive players. He has a great mind for the game, he has a passion for our sport and this profession, and he is a hard worker. We are excited to have Coach Ikeda with us for years to come.
“I am also really excited about Mike Bartomioli stepping into our new hybrid position that will have him directing Young Quakers Athletics as well as handling our operational duties. This is a new position that demonstrates how well the Penn Athletics partnership with the Netter Center is going. Mike is the ideal candidate for this job because of his organizational skills, his passion for our Young Quakers program, and his experience in lacrosse. We are also very excited to have Coach Myers return for his third year. He has done a fantastic job both running our offense and coordinating our recruiting efforts, and his leadership and contributions across our program have been profound. Integrity and work ethic have always been at the core of what we do, and I believe our staff reflects those traits.”
Coach Murphy also announced the hiring of Todd MacFarlane to the staff as its volunteer assistant coach. MacFarlane comes to Penn from the University of Maryland, where he spent last year as the Terrapins’ director of lacrosse operations and helped lead them to the NCAA Championship final. A native of Crofton, Md., and an Arundel High School graduate, MacFarlane had spent the previous 15 years building, funding and directing numerous programs in the private and public sectors as well as coaching and playing lacrosse. In addition, he has extensive experience in physical fitness training.
“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Coach MacFarlane and his wife Jenny to our program,” said Murphy. “His energy, knowledge and experience are extraordinary and will make a significant impact on our program. Todd will be working with our midfielders, and in particular our face-off men. He brings a tremendous background to Penn Lacrosse, most recently at Maryland and Malvern, and his impact will be felt across everything we do.”
Just prior to his Maryland stint, MacFarlane spent three years at Malvern Prep serving as the Coordinator of External Programs. In that position, he developed and fostered relationships with surrounding community organizations and leaders that brought numerous events and programs to campus. He also established and implemented policies and procedures for external and internal facility programs, and negotiated facility use and facility maintenance and construction contracts.
MacFarlane also worked on the boys’ lacrosse coaching staff at Malvern Prep. He helped the Friars to the Inter-Ac co-championship in 2013, and in 2014 Malvern Prep won the Inter-Ac regular-season and Invitational titles and finished with the No. 2 high school ranking nationally.
From 2009-12, MacFarlane was the Director of Athletics, Facility Rentals and Head of Physical Education and Health Departments at The Phelps School in Malvern. While at Phelps, he spearheaded and managed the conversion of the school’s Equestrian Center into an Indoor Athletic Complex. In addition to his Phelps School duties, he also served as the Tri-County Leagues Commissioner for cross country and lacrosse.
From 2007-09, MacFarlane was Director of the La Jolla (Calif.) Lacrosse Foundation where he was responsible for development and expansion of a citywide lacrosse programs. He instituted year-round skills and physical training for middle school and high school athletes. In addition, he was responsible for overall budget and forecasting for three distinct programs. These programs increased the available funds to expand and maintain citywide programs established. Efforts include advertising and promotion of the programs and teams as well as participation of equipment suppliers.
From 2004-09, MacFarlane he was the founder and Director of Top Notch Training LLC (TNT), California’s first box lacrosse training company. TNT, also a sports training company that was a cooperative endeavor with the YMCA and SportsPlex along with local sponsors to provide lacrosse leagues, camps and clinics as well as speed and condition training for youth and adult athletes.
MacFarlane began his college career at Anne Arundel Community College, then moved on to Pfeiffer University. He was a Deep South All-Conference player in 2002 as Pfeiffer’s captain, top scorer and MVP. He ranked in the Top 20 nationally in point that season. He also was a Deep South All-Conference Academic recipient. MacFarlane later played professionally in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) with the Anaheim Storm.
MacFarlane earned a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and Multi-Subject Teaching from Champan University. Prior to college, MacFarlane served in the United States Marine Corps from 1994-98 and was honorably discharged and decorated with honors.
MacFarlane lives in the Philadelphia area with his wife, Jennifer.
