Following its 2016 season opening victory over Jacksonville University last night, a pair of Monmouth University juniors from Philly were named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse players of the week, league officials announced on Monday. Attackman Chris Daly (Lower Merion) was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, while goalkeeper Nick Hreshko (La Salle College HS) was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week.
Daly registered his fourth career hat trick with three goals in the Hawks’ season opening 11-5 victory at Jacksonville on Sunday night. Daly, who scored two of the Hawks’ first three of the game, including the first of the season, gave Monmouth a 3-0 lead. The junior, who put seven of his nine shots on frame, added his third goal of the match with 6:57 left in the third, which gave the Hawks a 7-3 lead. Daly also added a groundball.
“Chris’ game has really taken off this preseason due to his own playing experience from the past two seasons but also due to the fact that we are developing some chemistry within our offense allowing his creativity and skill set to really come through,” stated head coach Brian Fisher (Ridley). “Chris was a big part of our offense on Sunday night with his off ball movement, finding good spots around the goal and most importantly he finished his opportunities.”
Hreshko picked up his first career victory for the Hawks, making eight saves in Monmouth’s season opening 11-5 victory at Jacksonville on Sunday night. The junior was also credited with a groundball.
Fisher noted, “Nick has always been one of our hardest workers and most energetic players throughout his time here at Monmouth so it was great to see him play well on Sunday night. He has been very consistent all preseason long, making some difficult saves in each of our scrimmages and last night was no different. He came up big on a couple of our defensive miscues that could have made the game a little tighter.”
Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday, February 23, when the Hawks travel to Staten Island to take on Wagner at 3 pm in non-conference action.
Wagner’s McMenamin (St. Augustine Prep) is NEC Player of Week
Redshirt junior attackman Patrick McMenamin (St. Augustine Prep) tallied a career-high six goals in Wagner’s season-opening 15-8 victory over MAAC opponent Manhattan on Friday and was recognized for his efforts by being named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Week.
McMenamin scored a pair of first-quarter goals as part of a game-opening 6-0 run. After the Jaspers cut the deficit in half with three straight second-quarter goals to make it a 6-3 game at halftime, the Seahawks scored the first two goals of the second half, with McMenamin sinkng the second score, to give him a hat trick and the Seahawks an 8-3 lead.
The gritty 5-6, 160-pound McMenamin, who has two brothers, twin brother William and older brother Michael that are fellow Seahawk midfielders, added his fourth goal of the game in the third quarter and two more in the fourth as Wagner pulled away for the 15-8 win. McMenamin, whose six goals came on 14 shots, added two ground balls in the victory.
