From Press Release
Lafayette women’s lacrosse senior Kirsten Wilhelmsen (Strath Haven) was named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced on Thursday morning.
Wilhelmsen, an All-Patriot League Second Team honoree a year ago, led the team in scoring with 47 goals on the year and was third in the Patriot League in goals per game, netting 2.76 per contest. The Wallingford, Pa. native was also an Academic All-Patriot League selection in 2015, carrying a 3.42 grade-point average as a Neuroscience major.
“We are thrilled that Kirsten has been recognized as one of the top players in the conference this preseason,” head coach Alison Fisher said. “With the league expanding to ten teams this year, the talent and depth continues to get better and better. For Kirsten to be among the League’s top 12 athletes is a significant honor.”
Wilhelmsen started all 17 games at attack and midfield for the Maroon and White in her sophomore season, accumulating 52 points, coupling her 47 goals with five assists. Her 3.06 points per game ranked sixth in the Patriot League rankings and her 2.76 goals per contest were also good enough for 32nd, nationally.
“Kirsten is one of the most dynamic players to have ever played here at Lafayette and she took on the lofty responsibility of being our leading scorer and go-to offensive player last year in just her second season,” Fisher added. “She has grown and matured a lot this offseason and our offense is reaping the benefits of her versatility and explosiveness. She will no doubt be the target that other teams are focused on neutralizing and we are confident that she is up to the challenge. She belongs among this talented group and the recognition is well deserved.”
The Lafayette women were picked to finish seventh in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, looking to improve on a 4-13 mark a year ago when the team went 2-6 in league play. The 2016 season opens on Feb. 17 against Manhattan with opening draw set for 6 p.m. from Fisher Stadium.
