Furman men’s lacrosse defender Jon Vandenberg has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District (District 4) Men’s At-Large Team in recognition of his combined performance on the field and in the classroom, it was announced today. Vandenberg is one of two Furman athletes named Academic All-District in 2015-16 (Carl Rider, football).

Vandenberg, a junior from Glen Mills, Pa., and Garnet Valley High, was among 10 NCAA Division I male athletes covering men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s gymnastics, men’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s rifle, men’s skiing, men’s swimming, men’s tennis, men’s volleyball, men’s water polo, and men’s wrestling selected in balloting in Academic All-District 4, which represents the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. He will now contend with other district representatives from across the country for Academic All-America first, second, and third team honors, which will be announced later this month.
Vandenberg was a first-place winner in 2014 for the Pansini Law Group Scholar-Athlete Award, which recognizes academics, service and athletic success.
Vandenberg appeared in all 13 games for the Paladins in 2016, making eight starts. He scored three goals as a defenseman and added one assist. Vandenberg caused seven turnovers and picked up 15 ground balls. Last season, Vandenberg was named to inaugural SoCon All-Tournament team.
He spearheaded Furman men’s lacrosse’s community service efforts that earned the Paladin men’s lacrosse team Furman’s Max and Trude Heller Commitment to Community Award and was the 2015 recipient of Furman’s Alfred S. Reid Memorial award for outstanding qualities of leadership, scholarship, and service to the university.
A biology major, Vandenberg sports a 3.90 GPA and is a member of the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team, the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and is a recipient of the Commissioner’s Medal.
