From Press Release
James Madison, which won the CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship title last season, has been voted as the preseason favorite to finish atop the league in 2016.
JMU is coming off a 2015 season where the Dukes went 15-5 overall, finished second in the regular-season CAA standings at 5-1, and earned the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after capturing the CAA Championship crown.
The Dukes – who received five first-place votes in the CAA preseason coaches poll – have also been ranked 21st in the preseason Inside Lacrosse media poll.
2015 CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship runner-up Towson is second in the league’s preseason poll, followed by No. 3 Delaware and defending regular-season champion Hofstra at No. 4.
Elon at No. 5, William & Mary at No. 6 and Drexel at No. 7 round out the poll.
Also announced on Wednesday was the 2016 CAA Women’s Lacrosse Preseason All-Conference Team, a list headlined by preseason Player of the Year Jaci Gordon of James Madison.
Gordon – a midfielder – was an All-CAA First Team pick in 2015, and has been recognized by Inside Lacrosse as a 2016 preseason honorable mention All-American. The senior totaled 40 goals and 22 assists last season for the Dukes, in addition to 11 ground balls, seven caused turnovers and five draw controls.
JMU and Delaware lead the preseason All-CAA Team with three selections apiece, followed by Elon, Hofstra and Towson with two each, and William & Mary with one.
In addition to Gordon, Delaware attacker Casey Lyons and defender Erin Wein return to the preseason All-Conference team after earning All-CAA First Team accolades in 2015.
The 2016 season officially gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 6, and will culminate May 6th and 8th with the CAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, hosted by Drexel.
