This is one of a series of previews for the 2016 Philly lacrosse season

Phoenixville

Head coach: Colin Shaw (succeeds Grady Wise)

2015 Record: 1-13 PAC-10, 2-14 overall

Coach’s outlook: “This group shows up to practice everyday and they play their hearts out. I have put them through harder practices than all of them have experienced, and they have all stuck together through it. I believe in these young men, but more importantly they believe in each other. This will be the most competitive, hard-nosed, and close-knit team Phoenixville HS has ever seen. Case and point, I asked who and what to write about, they all chose not to mention individuals, but the team. I am extremely lucky to be able to coach these guys.”

Pope John Paul II

Head coach: Sean Henry (succeeds Matt McMillen)

2015 Record: 4-10 PAC-10, 6-11 overall

Returnees/players to watch:
John McKendry (senior, midfield, 8 goals, 11 assists )
Justin Kent (sophomore, midfield, 10 goals, 2 assists)
Ryan Kormos (junior, attack, 7 goals, 1 assist)
Michael Florig (sophomore, defense, 2 assist, 21 groundballs)
Matt Cressman (sophmore, attack/midfield,2 goals, 5 assists)
Kyle Donovan (sophomore, attack, 2 goals, 1 assist)
Noah Balliet (sophomore, goalie)

Coach’s outlook: “After graduating our entire starting lineup from last year, except our senior captain, John McKendry, we have a very young, yet talented squad this year. Our four returning seniors provide us with the leadership necessary to navigate this team through a challenging PAC-10 schedule and serve as mentors for the underclassmen. Most of the team has been playing together for years and has a great chemistry on and off the field. Our goal for this season is to post the school’s first winning season and make the PAC-10 Final Four.”

Pottsgrove

Head coach: Todd Van Horn, 1st season (succeeds Fred Michaels)

2015 Record: 1-13 PAC-10, 1-14 overall

Returnees/players to watch:
Senior Brendan Wurtz, Midfield, 2nd team all-league (Messiah)
Senior Tyler Van Horn, Defense, (Misericordia)
Senior Wyatt Porter, Midfield, (Kutztown, football)
Senior Thaddeus Brown, Goalie, 3-year starter
Senior Garret Walton, Attack, missed last year because of injury

Coach’s outlook: “We have strong senior leadership and a promising incoming freshmen class with a lot of potential. Our team goals are to improve on last year’s record while establishing a firm foundation to promote the future of Pottsgrove Lacrosse. We’re looking forward to playing on our new all-weather surface in 2017.”
