This past weekend in Annapolis, MD the 2021 Freedom Red boys’ lacrosse team won the title at the Summer Exposure tournament. With the heat pushing 100 degrees the boys showed tremendous resolve in going 5-0 to win the championship.

On Saturday the boys beat a strong LVLCV team followed by Evolve Elite from Canada and wrapped with a victory over HoCo. The team was led that day by the longstick midfield play of Collin Measel, whose strong ground ball play, strong defense between the boxes, and sound decision making led to a lot of transition play.
The offense was spread across multiple players and led by Braeden Lange, Dylan McMahon, Owen Mehok, Owen Murray, Haden Quillman, Jack Giles, Sam Forte, Luke Wetzel, Sean Kaiser and Justin Sanelli. Even goalie Ben Tompkins chipped in with an assist. The face off X was also a huge factor and was patrolled by Colby Riddell, Richie Hughson, and also Murray who all averaged over 70%.
On Sunday the team beat a very strong Looney’s team on the back of strong midfield play, most notably from Quillman who scored two huge goals to lead the team to victory 4-3. In the championship the boys faced a tough Rock team however came out very strong despite the heat with three goals from Lange, and one each from McMahon, Forte, Giles, Wetzel, and Kaiser. Sam Forte’s tenacious play on both ends of the field was instrumental in the title game.
Defensively the team was very short handed however the trio of JD Shimer, Egan Butala, and Drew Deves played srong in securing a goals against average of 3.2 goals per game. Each boy played through the tremendous heat and never left the field while playing extremely sound defense and most importantly displayed phenomenal teamwork.
In the cage were Ben Tompkins and Tommy O’Malley who both produced key saves and great clearing. Both boys stood tall and made numerous point blank saves to help secure the championship.
