From Press Release

It was a second overtime game in a row and a second overtime win for Temple lacrosse, as the Owls (2-0) earned a 12-11 victory at city rival Saint Joseph’s (0-1) on a snowy Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Carly Demato (Shawnee), who recorded her third career hat trick, scored what would prove to be the game-winner with 1:49 remaining in the overtime period.

It was a high-scoring overtime with three goals by Temple and two from the Hawks in just six minutes. The Owls found themselves down 11-9 less than two minutes in, but got back-to-back goals from sophomore Morgan Glassford (Strath Haven) and junior Megan Tiernan (Washington Township) to tie it up with 3:20 remaining.

Junior Rachel Schwaab finished with a team-high four points in the contest, scoring two goals and adding two assists.

Saint Joseph’s sophomore defender Maggie Egan’s third goal of the game with 4:56 remaining in regulation forced overtime at 9-9, and freshman attack Kristen Kelbon scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from junior midfielder Kelly Phelan just 62 seconds in to put the Hawks ahead, 10-9. Just 43 seconds later, Phelan followed with an EMO goal of her own to give the Hawks an 11-9 edge heading into the final 4:15 of the six-minute overtime.

The game was a cold one and initially delayed by snow before getting underway. The Hawks scored two goals in the first three minutes of the game, but the Owls were then able to hold them to just one goal in the next 37 minutes of action.

Temple used an 8-1 run spanning the last 19 minutes of the first half into the first three minutes of the second half to take a 7-3 lead with 27:25 left in regulation. The teams then traded goals over the next 10 minutes, with Demato and Avery Longstaff scoring for Temple.

With just over 11 minutes left, the Hawks trailed 9-5 but came all the way back to tie the score with just under five minutes to go. The Owls had five shots to the Hawks’ one in those final minutes, but two went wide and three were saved by SJU goalkeeper Nora McGeever (Archbishop Carroll).

Nicole Barretta (Downingtown East) also scored for the Owls.

Phelan (3G, 1A) and Egan (3G) led the way for SJU while Sarah Smith (1G, 1A), Ambrose (1G), McCallion (1G, Notre Dame Academy), Kelbon (1G), and senior midfielder Julia Falcone (1G, West Chester East) added goals.

Defensively, junior Caroline Hagan scooped up a team-high three ground balls while Smith, junior defender Mallory Grey, and Egan added two caused turnovers apiece.
Temple will face another city rival as the Owls look to remain undefeated, traveling up Broad Street to La Salle for a 4:00 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
