Staff Report
Two Strath Haven graduates, sisters Kristina Penikis (also a 2011 Brown University grad) and Suzanna Penikis (2015 SH grad) along with Villanova grad Rachel Lasda will represent Latvia in the 2015 ELF European Women’s Lacrosse World Championships Aug. 6-15 in Nymburk, Czech Republic.
The tourney, governed by the current rules of women’s lacrosse sanctioned by the FIL, is considered the first ever independently held women’s lacrosse European championship.
Teams have been divided in three groups of four and one group of five. The seeding has been determined by given team’s placement at the most recent EC (Amsterdam 2012) and World Cup (Oshawa 2013 – relative placement amongst European teams). Seeded teams have been divided following a key aiming to create even groups.
Kristina Penikis was a two-year starter at Brown on defense and Suzanna was a Second Team All-Central League pick this year while also earning US Lacrosse Academic All American. She will play at Williams College. Lasda graduated from Villanova in 2011 and was a four-year starter at midfield.
A third Penikis sister, Annalise Penikis, who also graduated from Strath Haven and starred at Swarthmore College (2013 alum) was selected to play, but was unable to participate because she is starting medical school.
Other countries competing are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Wales.
