The Villanova men’s lacrosse team is set to make their fourth-straight BIG EAST Tournament appearance this Thursday when it hosts the No. 1 seeded Denver Pioneers at 7 p.m. in Villanova Stadium. No. 2 Georgetown and No. 3 Marquette will square off in the first semifinal contest at 4:30 p.m. and both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Series History: Thursday marks the 10th overall meeting between the two schools with the all-time series favoring Denver by a 6-3 margin. It marks the second time in two years the two sides have played each other twice during a season, with both matches happening in the regular season and BIG EAST Tournament. Denver won the 2015 regular season meeting 15-4 in Denver, Colo.
Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Thursday’s contest with a 6-7 overall record and 1-4 conference mark. The Wildcats have posted wins over Penn State, Drexel, Delaware, Penn, Lehigh and St. John’s and have fallen to Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Fairfield, Marquette, Denver, Georgetown and Providence.
`Nova Offense: Sean Cerrone leads the team with 34 points via 12 goals and 22 assists while Jack Curran follows closely behind with 33 points. Freshman face-off specialist Luke Palmadesso has posted a 54% win percentage from the faceoff X this season taking 136-of-250 attempts. The Wildcats average 9.38 goals per game on offense and surrender 9.92 goals per game defensively.
‘Nova Defense: Sophomore Dan Willis has played 406 minutes in net and tallies a 9.45 goals against average and saves at a 54% clip while junior Greg Stamatov has seen 360 minutes in the crease and posts a 10.67 goals against average and a 48% save percentage. Villanova as a team has combined for 300 ground balls (23.07/game) and 70 caused turnovers.
A Look at Denver: Denver brings an 11-2 overall record and 5-0 conference mark into Thursday’s showdown. The Pioneers have posted wins over Duke, Air Force, Furman, Notre Dame, Lehigh, Penn State, Georgetown, Villanova, St. John’s, Providence and Marquette. Their two losses on the year have come via North Carolina and Ohio State.
Pioneer Offense: Denver averages 13.69 goals per game on offense and surrenders 8.22 goals per game defensively. Connor Cannizzaro (35g, 29a) leads the team with 64 points while 18 players have posted points for the Pioneers this season through 13 games.
Pioneer Defense: Ryan LaPlante has played 740 minutes in net this season and posts a 8.22 GAA and a .519 save percentage. The team has collectively grabbed 400 ground balls this season (30.80/game) and has won 229-of-325 faceoff’s (.705) on the season.
The Last Meeting (4/3/15): Wesley Berg had a career-high 10 points via seven goals and three assists as Denver powered to a 15-4 win over Villanova on Friday night at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. It was the Wildcats first return to Denver’s home turf since their 2011 meeting in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
