Villanova Men’s Lacrosse has announced their schedule for the upcoming 2016 season. The spring slate includes seven home games, two contests against 2015 NCAA tournament teams including the reigning NCAA Champion, and seven squads that were ranked or receiving votes in the USILA Coaches Poll at the conclusion of 2015. Following the culmination of the regular season, the Wildcats will set their sights towards the BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Championship slated to begin on Thursday, May 5th in Denver, Colo. for the beginning of the 2016 postseason.
The Wildcats start 2016 with a strong out of conference slate beginning with Harvard on Saturday, February 20th in Cambridge, Mass. The two squads will square off for the first time in program history and will mark the second of four matchups for the Wildcats against Ivy League schools this season. An away contest against in-state rival Penn State on Saturday, February 27th rounds out Villanova’s February schedule for early-season lacrosse.
The month of March will be a busy one for the Wildcats with six games in a span of 28 days, including two away matches and four contests at Villanova Stadium. Tuesday, March 1st marks the home opener for Villanova when they host Philadelphia-rival Drexel for an afternoon matchup. The Wildcats make the short trek to Delaware on Saturday, March 5th before returning home to host another local foe in Penn on Saturday, March. 12th. Another midweek in-state tilt is set for Tuesday, March 15th at Bucknell before a pair of home contests against Fairfield and Brown on March 15th and 26th, respectively, round out the non-conference portion of Villanova’s schedule.
BIG EAST action dominates April with the first league contest of the season scheduled at Marquette on Saturday, April 2nd. Denver, the 2015 NCAA Champions, visits the Wildcats on Saturday April 9th in what will be a hotly contested match at Villanova Stadium. Georgetown dots the schedule a week later on Saturday, April 16th while the final away game of the year will take place on Saturday, April 23rd against St. John’s in Jamaica, N.Y. Villanova concludes the regular season at home against Providence on Saturday, April 30th for their last tune up before the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Denver Pioneers will host the BIG EAST Tournament set to begin on Thursday, May 5th and concludes just two days later on Saturday, May 7th; it marks the first time since the inception of the championship that Villanova will not host. The league tournament includes the top four teams in BIG EAST regular season round-robin competition with the winner claiming the all-important NCAA automatic bid.
The Wildcats are coming off a 6-8 overall record and 1-4 mark in conference games in 2015. The 2016 squad returns 30 letterwinners including 2015 All-BIG EAST Second Team honorees Jack Curran (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Sean Cerrone (Huntington, N.Y.).
