University of Delaware men’s lacrosse head coach Bob Shillinglaw has announced that a trio of standout midfielders – Elijah Conte, Steve Delargy, and Jackson Finigan – have been selected as team captains for the 2016 season.
The three are among 28 players returning for the Blue Hens this spring. Delaware will open its season Feb. 6 at Bucknell. The complete schedule will be announced next week.
“Our staff is extremely excited about the selection of Jackson Finigan, Steve Delargy and Elijah Conte as captains for the 2016 season,” said Shillinglaw, who will begin his 38th season at Delaware and his 41st season overall as a head coach in 2016. “Their selection was by a team vote and all three have done a terrific job of leading the team both on and off the field this fall. Jackson, Steve, and Elijah have been positive examples making clear to all of our players the level of commitment needed for success. I am looking forward to working closely with them for this upcoming season.”
Conte, a senior history major from South Orange, N.J. (Glen Ridge High School), returns as a fifth-year player this spring and anchors the squad from his defensive midfield position. He played in all 15 games with five starts in 2015 when he scored two goals, dished out one assist, and recorded 15 groundballs and seven caused turnovers. For his career, Conte has played in 46 games and posted two goals, two assists, 36 groundballs, and 19 caused turnovers.
Delargy, a senior honor student as a finance major from Morristown, N.J. (Morristown HS), returns as a major part of the Blue Hens’ top midfield unit and is the team’s fourth-leading returning scorer. He played in 14 games and started five contests during the 2015 season when he recorded three goals and four assists and added 14 groundballs and two caused turnovers. For his career, Delargy has played in 32 games with 20 starts and has 19 goals, 12 assists, and 24 groundballs.
Finigan, a junior honor student as a finance major from Concord, Mass. (Concord-Carlisle HS/Deerfield Academy), returns as the Blue Hens’ top player this spring. He is the team’s returning leader in goals (15), assists (11), points (26), shots (63), groundballs (44), and caused turnovers (14). A third-year starter, he has played in 31 games with 25 starts and has 22 goals, 24 assists, 70 groundballs, and 12 caused turnovers.
