Radnor’s Emily Games knew exactly what she would do with the ball given the chance when the host Raiders and Great Valley headed to overtime Saturday at the 15th Annual Katie Samson Festival.
“If I got the shot, I was going to go for the corner,” she said. “This was great playing in front of so many people. I really like playing this game. It’s my favorite game each year.”
Games scored 1:06 into the sudden death extra frame, giving the Red Raiders (11-1, ranked No. 3 by Phillylacrosse.com) an 11-10 decision over Great Valley.
“We played overtime against Suffern when we were in Myrtle Beach (during spring break),” said Games, who finished with four goals. “But down there you played the whole overtime period, and we already had a goal when I scored.”
The Patriots (11-2, No. 8 by Phillylacrosse.com) got goals from Ashlyn Smith and Linnea Hughes, off a nifty pass from Natalie Kahn, 18 seconds apart to tie the score with three minutes to play. The Red Raiders survived an 8-meter shot in the closing seconds of the second half to reach overtime.
“During the break, the coaches told us we had to win the (overtime) draw,” Games said.
Sophomore Julianne Puckette took that draw, which was controlled by Lindsay Frumer.
“She doesn’t usually get many draw controls,” Radnor coach Brooke Fritz said of Frumer.
One dropped pass nearly ruined the Red Raiders’ plans before Games saw the opportunity she was waiting for and made the most of it.
Fritz said the Patriots presented a major challenge with their size and skills.
“That was the most-athletic team we’ve played,” the coach said. “We didn’t match up with them very well because of the size differential. We didn’t play our best game, but I’m happy we came out of here with the win.”
Reilly Masterson and Hope Smith scored two goals for Radnor, and goalie Maddie Lally made 14 saves, including one that would have had ice hockey broadcasters shouting “kick save, and a beauty.”
“I’ll sacrifice my body to stop the ball,” Lally said. “I’ve been coming to the Katie Samson Festival since I was little, and I really love it.
“The crowds come out, and you know it’s to support a good cause and help other people.”
Smith scored four goals, Hughes added three goals and one assist, and Kahn had one goal and two assists for Great Valley, which has dropped close decisions to Conestoga and Radnor on successive weekends.
