Girls’ lacrosse: Moorestown’s fast start, defense keeps streak going at 79

The Host Moorestown girls’ lacrosse team raced to a 5-1 halftime lead and then used strong defense to hold on for a 5-3 victory Saturday over Mountain Lakes and its 79th straight victory.

The Quakers (2-0) led only 2-1 before Quinn Nicolai (three draw controls) scored two goals within 2:55 to make it 4-1 with 1:38 left in the first half. With only 11 seconds left in the half, Abbey Brooks scored off an Emily Troy (one goal, one assist) feed to make it 5-1.

Mountain Lakes, 0-2 but one of the top-rated teams in the state, had possession much of the second half and converted on goals by Sarah Bedard (two goals) and Natalie LaBeau.

Overall, Moorestown won 9 of the 10 draws but converted only 5 of its 18 shots. Jessica Goralski made four saves and Melanie Becker led the defense with with four ground balls and three draw controls.
