From Press Release
Maryland men’s lacrosse coach John Tillman has announced the hiring of former Malvern Prep assistant Todd MacFarlane as director of lacrosse operations. A native of Crofton, Md., MacFarlane has more than 15 years of coaching experience.
“We are thrilled to welcome Todd to the Maryland lacrosse family,” Tillman said. “Todd comes to Maryland with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we are excited to have him on board. He is deeply rooted in the mid-atlantic region and will play a key role in the day-to-day aspects of our program.”
MacFarlane spent the last three years at Malvern, serving as the coordinator of external programs and assistant coach of the varsity lacrosse team. As assistant coach, MacFarlane played a key role in the implementation and execution of programs throughout the year, while coaching numerous all-americans. Malvern finished the 2014 season ranked second in the nation with an undefeated record and champion of the Inter-Ac League and Inter-Ac Invitational.
As external programs coordinator, he played a large role in establishing policies for external facility use and developing relationships with the surrounding Malvern community. MacFarlane also strategically located key marketing areas for successful programs and events.
“I am very excited to be a part of the University of Maryland and would like to thank Coach Tillman, Coach Conry, Coach Reppert and the Maryland athletic department for giving me the opportunity to join the Terrapin lacrosse staff,” MacFarlane said. “I am eager to get started and do my part in enhancing what is already a tradition-rich program. My time at Malvern Preparatory School was very special to me and my family and we were very fortunate to be a part of an amazing family there.”
MacFarlane has strong roots in the Philadelphia region, where he was head coach for a number of clubs in both Malvern and Haverford between 2009 and 2013.
After serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1994-98, MacFarlane was highly involved in the growth of lacrosse in California for more than a decade from 1998-2009. He spent the first three years as head coach at La Costa Canyon High School, before serving as head coach at the University of San Diego from 2003-05.
MacFarlane was also the founder of the sports training company, Top Notch Training LLC (2004-09), in addition to being the director of the La Jolla Lacrosse Foundation (2007-09).
MacFarlane attended Arundel High School and played lacrosse for Bud Beardmore at Anne Arundel Community College before finishing his career at Pfeifer University in North Carolina. He was a member of the 2002 Deep South All-Conference and All-Academic Teams.
