From Press Release
Following a stellar performance against Boston University, Lehigh junior defenseman Casey Eidenshink (La Salle) has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday. Eidenshink has stepped up on the Mountain Hawks’ defense this season, including on Saturday when he tallied three groundballs and a career-high four caused turnovers in Lehigh’s thrilling 10-9 victory.
Eidenshink and his defense didn’t allow a goal for a stretch of 18:20 bridging the end of the first through beginning of the third quarters. During that stretch, Lehigh’s offense scored four straight goals to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead.
For the season, Eidenshink now owns 11 groundballs and five caused turnovers. After starting one game his first two seasons, he’s started all three games this year.
Seniors Matt Poillon and Patrick Corbett also received honorable mention laurels on Monday as Poillon made a season-high 15 saves (just three from tying a career high) while Corbett scored a career-high five goals. Corbett scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining while Poillon made a big save with just over 40 seconds remaining to preserve Lehigh’s fifth straight Patriot League opening victory.
The 20th ranked Mountain Hawks now prepare for a big road matchup as they travel to #14/15 Loyola in a rematch of the 2014 Patriot League Championship Game. Opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
St. Joe’s Blewitt earns NEC award
After registering his first collegiate half trick to spark a 7-0 opening run against #14/12 Penn last Tuesday, Saint Joseph’s freshman attack Chris Blewitt (Bergen Catholic) has been selected the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. This marks Blewitt’s first NEC weekly honor of his career.
Blewitt’s team-best three goals sparked SJU’s 7-0 opening run against the Quakers in SJU’s eventual heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to Penn last Tuesday.
The rookie scored SJU’s second goal of the game with 6:54 remaining in the first period and added back-to-back scores with :05 left in the first and then just 12 seconds into the second to put SJU up 5-0 in the mist of the eventual 7-0 opening run.
Blewitt took three shots – all for goals – and added a ground ball in his third collegiate appearance and second collegiate start.
