Matt Moore scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and finished with four goals and an assist as Garnet Valley ddefeated host Penncrest, 12-10, tonight in a Central League showdown at Neumann University.
The game was moved to Neumann due to the lack of a turf field at Penncrest, which voted later in the evening to put in a turf field at the high school.
The game featured what many people feel is the Central League favorite, Garnet Valley (2-0, 2-0) and the defending league and PIAA champion Lions. The Jaguars held an early 5-1 lead and led, 7-4, at halftime before the Lions roared back and tied it, 8-8, on two straight goals by Ryan Kinnard.
But after Moore’s goal the Jags later took a 12-9 lead and held on for the win.
Denny Nealon added four goals and an assist and Dan Lanham won 19 of 25 face-offs for the Jaguars while Michael Bonaddio made 11 saves.
“They still pretty good, they keep coming at you,” said Garnet Valley coach Frank Urso of Penncrest. “We had them 5-1 and we gave up a goal and they got a little momentum. We went ahead again and they scored a few and got more momentum.
“It was just one of those back-and-forth games with a lot of big plays. There were a lot of kids stepping up.”
Alex Bonnett had four goals and Ryan Kinnard added three goals and an assist while Drew Hanna scored twice for Penncrest.
“We learned a lot about our young team,” said Penncrest coach Wayne Matsinger. “Garnet Valley is one of the best teams and we gave them a scare. We’d like to see them again in the future, that’s for sure.”
