From Press Release
Despite jumping out to a 4-1 halftime advantage, Fairfield responded in the second half to down the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team 7-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Carli Sukonik (Harriton) and freshman Allison LaBeau led the offense with two goals apiece. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they host Bucknell in the Patriot League opener Saturday.
LaBeau added two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Kendall Garden scored Lehigh’s fifth goal. Freshman Krista Dampman posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers while junior Kelly Scott caused a pair of caused turnovers as well.
Senior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made five saves between the pipes.
LaBeau opened the scoring at 20:49 of the first half, then after a Fairfield goal, Lehigh answered with the final three of the opening stanza. LaBeau scored her second in a 3:21 span to make it 2-1 at 17:28 before Sukonik added her first just two minutes later. Sukonik beat the first-half horn and made it 4-1 with just one second on the clock.
Fairfield opened the second half with two straight goals before Garden made it 5-3 Mountain Hawks at 20:22. However, the Stags ended the game with four in a row, pulling within one at 17:23 then tying the score at the 13:41 mark. Fairfield took a 6-5 lead with just over nine minutes remaining and added an insurance tally for the 7-5 final.
The Stags held a 16-8 edge in shots and 9-4 in draw controls while groundballs were tied at 14.
Colorado 15, Temple 6
Not able to string together more than two goals in a stretch, the owls suffered a loss at Colorado (3-2) in the Owls’ first of two Spring Break games. The Buffaloes scored four goals to start the second half and begin to put the game out of reach for Temple (2-3).
Senior Kelly Syphard scored twice for Temple, while freshman Carly Demato also finished with two points by scoring a goal and adding an assist.
The Owls out-shot Colorado 32-29 in the game, but Buffs goalkeeper Soenksen made an impressive 18 saves to keep Temple’s offense at bay.
Both of Syphard’s goals were scored on free position shots, but overall it was a weakness for Temple as they converted just 3-of-13 on free position shots for the game. Nicole Tiernan (Washington Township) and Syphard both scored in the first half, but Colorado took a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The Buffs had a 9-2 lead within the first seven minutes of the second half before back-to-back goals by Jaymie Tabor and Syphard cut the margin to five, but the Owls would get no closer than that the rest of the way. Megan Tiernan (Washington Township) scored off a Demato assist with close to 17 minutes left, but Demato’s goal near the four-minute mark would be the only Owl goal the rest of the way.
Temple will train in Colorado for the next few days before facing Denver on Saturday, March 8 at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
