Kelly Palace and Eva Winiarski (Downingtown West) scored three goals apiece tonight as visiting Drexel defeated La Salle, 10-8, today in women’s non-conference play.
Joelle Hartke added a goal and three assists and Alissa Watts had two goals to help the Dragons. Teresha Bradley stopped six shots for the Dragons, who moved to 4-3 with the victory.
Winiarski netted Drexel’s first goal after La Salle’s Caitlyn Brostrand was issued a yellow card just over four minutes into the action. Hartke assisted on the score. Watts followed just over a minute later with her first score of the night, a free position goal.
Caitlyn Brostrand (Camden Catholic) drained three goals and assisted on one more, but the La Salle lacrosse squad could not overcome a first half deficit under wind-driven rains at McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday. Katelyn Fay (Henderson) also added two goals for the Explorers (3-3).
After Drexel grabbed the early 2-0 lead, the Explorers roared back on the rainy night with four straight to take a 4-2 lead midway through the first half. From there, the Dragons took over. Palace pulled Drexel back within one with her goal at the 12:47 mark, the first of three for the senior. The game marked her third this season with at least three goals, the second such game in a row.
Emily Duffey pulled the Dragons back even with 5:49 to go before halftime, an unassisted score for her eighth of the year. Just 30 seconds later, Watts netted her second of the night to put the Dragons back on top. Palace scored again with 100 seconds remaining in the first half, and Hartke once again hooked up with Winiarski to give Drexel a three-goal lead heading into the break.
Palace and Winiarski added their third goals to open the scoring in the second half and put Drexel in a commanding position, up 9-4. The Dragons had stifled the La Salle attack for over 30 minutes of game play before Brostrand finally ended the Explorer drought and pulled them back within four goals with 13:03 remaining.
La Salle crept back within two goals when Erin McCabe scored with 1:15 to play, but the Dragons got a critical draw control after the score that allowed them to ice the win away. In all, Drexel won 12 of 20 draws on the evening.
Delaware 17, Virginia Tech 3
Midfielder Casey Lyons must like the number five. The sophomore from Ontario, Canada netted a game-high five goals for the third straight game and led the Blue Hens to their third straight victory as they pushed aside Virginia Tech at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (4-3), who have now won seven straight home games since last season, scored the first four goals of the game, jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead, and held the Hokies scoreless in the second half on the way to their largest margin of victory in four years under head coach Kateri Linville and the most since a 21-4 victory over Villanova back in 2005. Delaware has now outscored its last three opponents by a margin of 46-18.
Delaware captain Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) added three goals and two assists, Shannon Hawley scored three times and added an assist, and Abbie Hartman contributed two goals and an assist.
Lyons, who also dished out an assist vs. Virginia Tech, is the first UD player to score five or more goals in three straight games since All-American Missy Meharg scored five, seven, and six goals respectively vs. Virginia, West Chester, and Princeton to close out the 1986 regular season.
In all, eight different players scored goals Wednesday, seven different Blue Hens dished out assists, and goalkeepers Tori Zorovich and Alex Zaugra (Shawnee) shutdown the Hokies. Zorovich made five saves before giving way to Zaugra, who closed out the win with a save in two minutes of play.
Penn State 19, Rutgers 7
Junior midfielder Kelly Lechner matched her career high with five goals, as No. 11/12 Penn State secured a victory against Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium. Twelve Nittany Lions recorded at least one point as the team improved to 4-3 overall (0-0 ALC) with its second straight win.
Lechner’s five markers matched her previous highs that she set against Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt during the 2013 season. Both sophomores Madison Cyr and Jenna Mosketti recorded three-goal games, while freshman Sarah Piazza’s goal and sophomore Heather Harman’s assist marked their first points in the Blue and White.
Junior midfielder Tatum Coffey and reigning ALC Rookie of the Week Abby Smucker contributed two goals each, while senior Mackenzie Cyr (1g, 1a) and junior Maggie McCormick (2a) added two points each. Freshman goalkeeper Cat Rainone (Marple Newtown), who corralled a game-high four ground balls, made seven saves as she improved to 3-2.
Division III
Gwynedd Mercy 17, King’s 15
In a game that saw 11 lead changes and 10 ties, the host Griffins were led by sophomore Danae Perrymond (Pottstown) who had a career-high six goals. Junior Kelsey Yori (Ridley) added five tallies.
Swarthmore 18, Bryn Mawr 1
Sophomores Elizabeth Upton and Nathalie Perry-Freer each recorded career-high scoring marks to propel the Garnet to a convincing 18-1 victory over Bryn Mawr in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams in Hilton head, S.C. The Garnet netted 18 unanswered goals and remained undefeated through four games this season.
Swarthmore (4-0) established control early by getting four unassisted tallies from four different players in the opening 10 minutes of play. Seniors Corinne Sommi, Lucy Whitacre and Emma Sipperly as well as sophomore Lizzie Kölln all found the back of the net. Sommi then netted three goals in a row and the Garnet led 13-0 at the break thanks in part to an Upton marker with exactly one minute on the clock that capped the offensive barrage.
The second half was also dominated by the Garnet, as Upton notched her first career hat trick by opening the scoring at the 29:17 mark shortly after the break. After three different players found the cage, Perry-Freer completed a streak of 18 unanswered goals for Swarthmore by posting an unassisted tally with just 4:12 to play. Bryn Mawr was able to avoid being blanked by getting a marker from senior Kathleen Magner with 2:59 left.
