Sophomore Adam Goldner scored four goals and Carson Cocco stood out in goal Thursday as visiting Malvern Prep held off Salesianum School, 6-5, in a non-league game involving two of the top three Philly boys’ teams.
Cocco made seven saves and Kevin McGeary ably replaced junior standout Charles Kelly (stomach virus) at the X for the Friars (5-0), ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com.
No. 3 Salesianum School, in its season opener, cut a 5-2 deficit after three periods to 5-4, but could not get the tying goal. Jason Kelly led the attack for the three-time defending state champions with three goals. Ryan Kern posted eight saves.
Connor Glancy added a goal and an assist for Malvern Prep and Ryan Hilburn dished off three assists.
Great Valley 10, Bayard Rustin 3
Princeton commit Greg Merrill (five goals, two assists) became Great Valley’s all-time leading goals scorer (181 goals and counting).
Conestoga 10, Lower Merion 6
Chris Brady scored three goals and Christian Jobs won 13 of 15 face-offs for the Pioneers in their Central League win.
Daniel Buckman (three goals) and Evan Wolf (2g, 1a) led the Aces.
Holy Ghost Prep 5, Council Rock North 3
Michael Major scored three goals and Greg Price posted 14 saves for Holy Ghost.
Hatboro-Horsham 9, Abington 6
Connor McPoyle had two goals and three assists and Marc Poust made 18 saves for the Hatters.
St Stephens & St Agnes (VA) 6, Penn Charter 5
Jon Horan had four goals and Sean Mckee made 21 saves for the Quakers in defeat.
Springside Chestnut Hill 8, Hun School (NJ) 7
Tasso Karras scored five goals to lead the Devils.
Springfield-Delco 11, Strath Haven 7
Mike Gerzabek had three goals and Luke Charamella added three goals and an assist while Zack Dworkin won 15 of 21 face-offs for the Cougars.
Will Ohley had four goals and an assist and Ethan Fink made 18 saves for Strath Haven
Academy of the New Church 9, Father Judge 8
James Vandergrift led ANC with five goals and two assists while Liam McGrath posted 12 saves.
West Chester East 11, Interboro 10
Matt Hahn had five goals and two assists and Eric Frye won 21 of 23 face-offs to lead East.
Christian Fisher tallied five goals and Chuck Kelly made 18 saves for the Bucs.
