There was a tremendous loss, a surprise ending, a group of signings that forbade a state champion, and a great personal comeback.
These were the most read stories of 2013 on Phillylacrosse.com.
Here is a brief recap of the top stories.
No. 1, May 29 –Lacrosse Community Mourns Death of Haverford School lacrosse player Kip Taviano
Never in the 6-year history of Phillylacrosse.com has a story gripped the community – for Haverford School and Garnet Valley and well beyond – as this one did. We learned of the tragedy when we saw numerous hits coming on Kip’s commitment story to Furman that had posted several months earlier.
Then we received the phone call that night informing us of the terrible news. The story caused more than 15,000 readers to come to Phillylacrosse.com the day it posted. The picture we post today was a shot of a t-shirt in Kip’s honor that was selling at the funeral, where Kip’s family showed incredible strength and grace amid unthinkable grief.
No. 2 – May 22 – Live blog of Inter-Ac Invitational finals: Malvern Prep vs. Haverford School
No. 6 – May 23- Inter-Ac Invitational finals: Haverford School comes of age
In a stunning emergency, a young but ever-improving Haverford School squad defeated the Inter-Ac League champion and arch-rival Malvern Prep Friars for the Inter-Ac Invitational championship. The Fords, who started the season with three losses, relied heavily on sophomores and freshmen and some savvy upperclassmen, and had to beat the defending tourney champion Episcopal Academy Churchmen in a tough semifinal game.
No. 3 – Dec. 12 – ReQRuitme boys’ recruit: St. Joseph’s Prep 2017 defenseman Young commits to Maryland
St. Joe’s Prep Jordan Young became the first 2017 (freshman) this year to commit to a college program. Last year only a handful of freshmen committed to college programs; this year at least 15 have already gone public with commitments. Like it or not, early recruiting has clearly become a major part of scholastic lacrosse.
No. 4 – Feb. 2 – La Salle senior Coleman looks to rebound from another major injury
La Salle senior Sean Coleman, one of the nation’s top recruits, never fully recovered in his junior year from a football injury and then had the bad fate of suffering another serious football injury as a senior. But he made a remarkable recovery and helped lead the Explorers to the state championship.
No. 5 – Feb. 21 -Boys’ lacrosse: La Salle announces signings, commitments of 14 Division I players
It was no surprise that La Salle was again a dominant force in 2013 with a cast led by Coleman and Matt Rambo; but the Explorers had much more, obviously, with this many D1 players. La Salle won the PIAA championship, its second in the 5-year history of the event, after falling in the state finals two of the past three years to the team it defeated this year, Conestoga.
