From Press Release
Penn’s 2014 season came to an end at the hands of top-seeded Maryland in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament today as the Terrapins knocked off the Quakers, 13-5.
The Red and Blue hung tight with the Terps throughout the first half, holding an early lead and keeping the potent Terrapin attack in range, but a 7-1 Maryland run to close the game was the deciding factor.
Unlike the regular season game in March at Franklin Field, Penn did not allow the Terrapins to score quickly – or even score first. Lindsey Smith (Unionville) scored the first goal of the game, giving Penn an early lead 4:34 into the game.
That was the only lead the Quakers would hold in the first half, as Maryland rattled off four consecutive goals to build a 4-1 lead 10:35 into the game. Four different players had goals in that run as the Terps worked their offensive depth. Two of the goals came on what can be termed fortunate bounces for the home team as Lucy Ferguson got a piece of the first and third goals for the Terps before the ball would just cross the line for the goal.
Tory Bensen would get Penn back on the board with a goal 18:22 into the game, finishing a Nina Corcoran pass. Corcoran would get a goal of her own 54 seconds later, bringing Penn within one at 4-3.
That was as close as the Quakers would get, though, as Brooke Griffin scored twice in a row for Maryland to build a three-goal lead. Bensen would net her second of the game with 3:39 to play in the half, climbing Penn within two goals. Any momentum for Penn was short-lived, however, as Beth Glaros scored her second of the half 55 seconds after Bensen had scored and Taylor Cummings finished the half with a goal at the 29:27 mark.
Out of the half, Maryland scored quickly, Glaros connecting 21 seconds into the second period. Neither team would score for the next 10 minutes before Tory Bensen would net her third of the game off a Smith pass with 19:50 to play. Each team caused two turnovers in that span, and Lucy Ferguson came up with two saves for Penn, including one on Zoe Stukenburg which sent Penn downfield in transition, leading to Bensen’s goal.
Maryland would score under a minute after Bensen’s goal to retake a five-goal lead and stave off any chance for a Penn comeback. The Quakers would hit two posts on their next two shots and Kelly McPartland would score with 9:12 remaining to all but ice the game.
Lucy Ferguson finished with eight saves in the game, including five in the second half.
The Quakers finish the season with a 13-5 record, the 18 games played in 2014 tied for third-most in a season by a Penn squad. The 13 wins are fifth-most by a Penn team.
