The Ursinus men’s lacrosse team opened its home slate on Wednesday night by defeating Widener, 7-1. The Bears again held an opponent without a goal in the second half for the second straight contest.

Junior midfielder Jake Weber (Manheim Township), junior attack Mike Neal and sophomore attack Logan Panaccione completed the trifecta, as they all had two goals in the game, with junior attack Steve Smyrl (Garnet Valley) having two assists and a goal. Junior attack Mark Stratton (Manheim Township) also added in two assists as Ursinus held Widener to just 11 shots in the second half.

Smyrl started the scoring for Ursinus just 1:18 into the game on an extra-man goal off of a Stratton assist, with Stratton assisting on Weber’s first goal at 2:12 for a 2-0 lead.

Widener got its lone goal at 14:20 on a scrum in front of the goal when Reed Hoffman scored for a 2-1 Ursinus lead.

Neal scored his first goal of the game at 7:56, accounting for Ursinus’ lone goal of the quarter and a 3-1 halftime lead.

Panaccione scored his first goal of the game with 10:15 left in the third on a Smyrl assists, with Smyrl assisting on Weber’s goal with 8:09 left in the third for a 5-1 lead.

Panaccione scored his second with 11:41 left in the fourth, followed by a goal from Neal at 6:44.

Senior faceoff specialist Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) was brilliant at the X, winning 8-of-11 faceoffs on the day. He also picked up five ground balls, including one in traffic as he was being pelted by Widener defenders. Junior defender Cody Lefevre had three caused turnovers on the night.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Neff, the Centennial Conference Defender of the Week, made 11 saves on the day.

Arcadia 11, Alvernia 5

The Knights (2-1) scored six of the eight second half goals in a non-conference contest. The Crusaders now stand at 1-2 following the loss.

The Knights never trailed in the contest after scoring all three first quarter goals, but were up by just one after a 3-1 Alvernia run that featured a pair of goals from junior attack Jared Toll (St. Catherines, Ont.) made it a 4-3 contest with 2:09 left in the second quarter.

Sophomore attack Robert Palumbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored with just nine seconds left in the second to give Arcadia a 5-3 lead at the half, and freshman midfielder John Caruso (Cinnaminson, N.J.) scored twice in a span of just 33 seconds to open the third quarter scoring and give the Knights a 7-3 advantage just over two minutes into the frame.

Freshman attack Thomas Warwick (Newark, Del.) scored four minutes into the third for the Crusaders to make it 7-4, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way as Arcadia closed the game with 4-1 run that featured three goals from sophomore attack Chris Jacovino (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to secure the win.

Jacovino finished the game with four goals, one assist and four ground balls for the Knights, while Caruso netted three goals with two assists and four grounds balls. Freshman attack Kenny Grant (Ridge, N.Y.) and Palumbo both had two goals and two ground balls.

Toll tallied two goals with one assist and five ground balls for Alvernia, while senior midfielder Colin Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa.) added one goal with two assists and three ground balls. Junior attack Patrick Corcoran (Chalfont, Pa.) and Warwick finished with one goal each.

Freshman goalie Jordan Culichia (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched eight saves as he recorded the first win of his collegiate career for Arcadia and evened his record at 1-1 for the season. Junior goalie Brandon Weaver (Shillington, Pa.) had 15 stops in taking the loss in net for the Crusaders.
