Junior Brian Kormondy notched his first career hat trick with three first-half goals and the University of Delaware withstood an early deficit to post a 9-6 non-league men’s lacrosse victory over Lafayette Tuesday afternoon at frigid Delaware Stadium.
Kormondy scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to tie the game and the Blue Hens (4-2) broke a third quarter tie with three straight goals on the way to its third straight victory and its second in three days. Delaware knocked rival Villanova by an 11-6 score Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
Tyler Barbarich had a standout game at the X for Delaware, winning 14 of 18 face-offs.
Lafayette (1-3), which led 3-1 after the first quarter and had a share of the lead midway through the third stanza, dropped its second straight game. Morgan Westby (Episcopal Academy) and Jason Sands each scored two goals and Sonny Rounds dished out to assists to pace the Leopard attack.
Delaware continued its dominance over Lafayette as the Hens downed the Leopards for the 34th straight time since 1959. and improved to 42-1 all-time in the series. The two schools were formerly foes in the old East Coast Conference.
The Blue Hens also got two goals and an assist from Logan Aunon while his older brother Tyler Aunon and fellow freshman Paul Major (Spring-Ford) each had a goal and an assist. Jeff Heath (St. Joseph’s Prep) and Tom Holland also tallied for the Blue Hens.
Delaware goalkeeper Conor Peaks, this week’s Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, shook off a slow start and closed with 11 saves for his third straight win. Tyler Barbarich, the nation’s fourth ranked faceoff specialist, continued to shine as he won 14 of 18 attempts.
Lafayette outshot the Blue Hens 34-32 and forced Delaware into a season-high 22 turnovers, but Delaware’s 32-28 advantage in groundballs, Peaks’ timely saves, and control of the faceoffs by Barbarich were key elements to the victory.
After Kormondy scored the game’s first goal just 2:30 in, Lafayette countered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead after one frame. Kormondy scored the first two goals of the second quarter in a span of 2:50 to tie the game and the Hens regained the lead on a goal by Holland with 5:39 left in the first half. The Leopards tied the game for the third time on a goal by Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) with 4:27 left.
The teams traded goals during the first six minutes of the second half to forge the fourth tie of the contest, but Logan Aunon scored with 1:52 left in the third quarter to break a tie and put the Hens up for good. Major, Heath, and Tyler Aunon each scored in the final quarter as the Hens kept the Leopards at bay.
Mac Gallagher (Shipley School) also scored for Lafayette. James Connelly (Malvern Prep) led the Blue Hen defense with two groundballs and a caused turnover.
Delaware be looking to reach its longest win streak since the 2010 NCAA Tournament season this Saturday when the Hens travel to Binghamton for a 1 p.m. faceoff. The game will mark the 600th career game coached by Shillinglaw.
