Billy McCullough (Springfield-Delco) won 9 of 13 face-offs and grabbed seven groundballs and Kevin Sweeney (Hatboro-Horsham) had a goal, an assist and three groundballs as visiting King’s edged Neumann, 6-5, today in a men’s lacrosse opened.
King’s rallied from a 5-4 deficit with two fourth-quarter goals, the last coming off the stick of Mike O’Brien with 2:47 remaining.
Down a goal to start the final quarter, King’s struck quickly when A.J. Bungert scored just 2:19 into the period to knot the score at 5-5. The Monarchs peppered the Neumann goal, holding a 10-3 advantage in shots but it was O’Brien who scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with under three minutes to play.
Patrick Rose (Hopewell Valley, NJ) had a goal and an assist for the Knights. Alex Becker (Mt. Pleasant, DE) made 20 saves.
Rob Williamson (Salesianum) scored the first goal of the game at the 9:37 mark of the first quarter, off an assist from Chris Scott (Marple Newtown). Ryan O’Kane (Ridley) put the Knights up 2-0 three minutes later. King’s netted one goal in the first quarter for a 2-1 score.
Ryan Eber scored the only goal of the second quarter for a 3-1 Neumann lead at the half.
Rose scored his goal 1:03 into the half for a 4-1 Knights advantage. The Monarchs then netted three straight goals to tie the score at four. Kevin Fonio (Upper Darby) put Neumann back up, 5-4, with 12 seconds left in the third quarter. Rose assisted on the goal.
King’s netted the only two goals in the fourth and final quarter. The Monarchs tied the game at the 8:51 mark and then took a 6-5 lead with 4:41 left in regulation. Neumann had its chances to tie the game, but could not net the tying goal and the clock ran out.
