Brett Manney, a genuine three-sport high school star who went on to become an NCAA Division I semifinalist, a standout pro indoor player and a key player at NXTsports, was inducted tonight into the Holy Ghost Prep Sports Hall of Fame.
Manney (Class of 2004) was inducted along with Michael Alcorta (’88), James Brogan (’72), Michael Smith (’94), John Stansy (’00), Gary Nolan (’95) and Ryan Tocicki at the Maltese Room
in Bensalem.
Manney starred in lacrosse and also in soccer and basketball at Holy Ghost (Class of 2004). He was a four year letterman, three-time all-area, three-time Northeast League selection and two-time captain in lacrosse. His senior year at Holy Ghost the Firebirds captured the school’s first lacrosse league championship and Manney was selected to play in the Southeastern PA All-Star game.
He was one of the only Philly athletes in recent times to be recruited as a Division I player in three sports (he was the Lower Bucks County basketball Player of the Year on a team that was a state finalist and earned All-Southeastern PA as a soccer player). He also was the first from Lower Bucks to play Division I lacrosse.
As a Blue Hen, he was a four-time letter winner and was a captain of the 2008 squad. The Blue Hens appeared in the CAA championship game three years and were the first ever male sport in the school’s history to capture a CAA title in 2007. The 2005 and 2007 teams went to the NCAA tournament and in 2007 advanced to the school’s first ever Final Four appearance for men’s lacrosse. He finished his career at Delaware as one of the program’s all time leaders in caused turnovers, was selected to play in the North South All-Star game and was considered one of the best defensive midfielders who has ever played.
Off the field at Delaware, Manney was the team’s representation on the Student Athlete Advisory Council, tutored young children, and broadcasted Delaware basketball and football games. In addition he was one the final four nominees for the National Student Leader Award and was selected for the Outstanding Contribution award for athletics at the conclusion of his senior year.
Manney was drafted by the Washington (now Chesapeake) Bayhawks of the MLL. Since 2008, he has played with the Bayhawks and now is a member of the Rochester Rattlers. In addition he has played in the NLL since 2009 and won a championship in his second year as a member of the Washington Stealth. He is in his fourth year as a member of the Philadelphia Wings and serves as an assistant captain and key member of the defense.
Manney also is a coach with NXT Lacrosse Club and has gained national recognition for his role as Showcase Lacrosse Director. He has helped mnake the Philly Showcase the top Fall recruiting event and one of the top recruiting events of the year.
Manney remains loyal to Holy Ghost Prep and has served as a volunteer assistant.
